Lawmaker says proposed energy rules 'unfair' to South

Several state officials said they are concerned that federal energy proposals would hurt the South, leading to increased energy rates and dampened economic development. They believe the legislation, which would require electric providers to generate a certain percentage of their energy from renewable sources, would allow other states to count alternative energy they currently provide including wind and solar.

Greg Attends U.S. Energy Summit

Greg Wren recently attended the American Legislative Exchange Council's 2008 Energy Academy June 20-22 in Orlando, Florida. The energy summit brought together key energy state legislators from throughout the U.S. along with energy experts from public and private sectors.

Wren Announces Legislative Task Force

State Rep. Greg Wren, R-Montgomery, announced Monday the creation of the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Task Force. The task force was possible thanks to actions taken on the last day of the 2009 legislative session.
"The CKD Task Force will assess the current and future impact of CKD on Alabama residents by examining the depth and breadth of kidney disease to develop appropriate state-wide strategies for the effective treatment and prevention of CKD," Wren said in a press release. read article

Local Bills Win Passage

Bills that would validate Montgomery's red- light camera enforcement program and establish a development authority for the Interstate 65 corridor are on their way to the governor's desk after receiving final passage in the waning days of the legislative session.
The bills, along with one that gives the county probate judge the ability to appoint certain employees as temporary judges, were the last of the agreed-upon bills that the county delegation wanted to get passed during the 2009 legislative session.
The delegation chairman, state Rep. Greg Wren, said that despite some glitches during change in the leadership for the city and the county, important legislation was passed.

Sales Tax Fairness Act of 2009 HB 482 by Representative Wren

Regarding the state sales tax on food HB482 The State Sales Tax Fairness Act of 2009 will simply remove 1 percent of the current state sales tax on food in each year the previous year's Education State Trust Fund (EFT) growth exceeded 3 percent. If Alabama's EFT growth would exceed 3 percent  for 4 consecutive years, then the entire 4 percent sales tax would be repealed within 5 years - without linking the graduated repeal of the to any increase on any Alabama Taxpayer. more

Permanent Joint Legislative Committee Focuses on 2009 Regular Session

On August 4th the Permanent Joint Legislative Committee on Energy met to begin work on the 2009 Regular legislative session. Rep. Greg Wren Committee Co-Chairman welcomed those in attendance and thanked everyone for their time and efforts during the 2008 Regular Session  and expressed his excitement  to begin work again for the upcoming 2009 Session. Committee Chairman Senator Wendall Mitchell made comments regarding the 2008 Regular Session and how close many of the energy bills came to final passage. Senator Mitchell was eager to begin the process again and hoped that everyone would work collaboratively together to address any concerns before the session began.

Senate Wins Rematch

Members of the Alabama House of Representatives put on their rally caps Tuesday night, but it was not enough as they easily were defeated by the Senate in a friendly softball game.

The senators were able to redeem themselves in a game at Auburn Montgomery with an easy 28-15 victory. The House had won the previous games, including a one-run victory a year ago. Read Article

Pintlala, Hayneville schools to stay open

City, county and state leaders have kept their promise to come up with $1.4 million to keep two Montgomery schools open for another year, but now they want voters to do their part.

MONTGOMERY, AL - During the recent annual meeting of the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) Representative Greg Wren (R-Montgomery) was named as Chairman of the State-Federal Relations Committee.

NCOIL is the nation's largest organization of legislators from each state who possess an in depth knowledge of the insurance industry. NCOIL legislators work to protect consumers in each state and preserve state regulation of insurance.  more

Energy bills expected to top Legislature list

Gas prices have gone down, but the Alabama Legislature isn't letting up on a package of energy bills that will save energy, promote alternative energy and create jobs.

"Just because fuel prices have dropped significantly does not mean we need to back off," said Rep. Greg Wren, vice chairman of the Permanent Joint Legislative Committee on Energy Policy.

"We're picking up for '09 where the session left off in '08."
